Shopify fees calculator: what each plan really costs you.

The plan price is the smallest line on most Shopify bills. Card fees on every sale, the extra fee for using your own payment provider, POS Pro and apps usually add up to more. Enter your numbers and see one monthly figure per plan, and the sales level where moving up a plan pays for itself.

Extra cost per month as your sales grow, with the same order size and card mix as above. Below zero the plan is cheaper; the lowest line is the cheapest plan at that level of sales.

In brief

  • US plan prices are $39, $105 and $399 per month for Basic, Grow and Advanced billed monthly, or $29, $79 and $299 billed yearly. Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term.15
  • With Shopify Payments you pay only the card rate. US standard online cards cost 2.9%, 2.7%, 2.5% and 2.25% plus 30¢ on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus.1
  • With another payment provider Shopify adds 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% of every sale on top of the provider's fee, in every country covered here.1
  • With Shopify Payments, Grow becomes cheaper than Basic above about $33,000 a month in US online sales, and Advanced cheaper than Grow above about $147,000, billed monthly. With another provider those points fall to $6,600 and $73,500.

Basic has no staff accounts besides the owner. Grow has 5, Advanced 15 and Plus an unlimited number, so a team that needs even one extra login starts at Grow whatever the fees say.1 New stores get three days free, then $1 a month for three months on most plans.

Card rates and transaction fees

Card rates are what Shopify Payments charges per payment. They fall as the plan goes up, which is the whole reason a bigger plan can cost less. US rates:

Which Shopify plan is cheapest?

Moving up a plan costs a fixed amount more each month and saves a percentage of every sale. The break-even point is the extra plan cost divided by the rate saved. In the US each step from Basic to Grow to Advanced lowers card rates by 0.2 points, so:

US, online sales per monthBilled monthlyBilled yearly
Grow beats Basic, Shopify Payments$33,000$25,000
Advanced beats Grow, Shopify Payments$147,000$110,000
Grow beats Basic, another provider$6,600$5,000
Advanced beats Grow, another provider$73,500$55,000

Derived from the prices and rates above: $66 / 0.2% = $33,000, $294 / 0.2% = $147,000, $66 / 1% = $6,600 and $294 / 0.4% = $73,500. The yearly column uses the $50 and $220 differences.

These points hold for any card mix in the US, because premium and international rates fall by the same 0.2 points. They move when in-person sales are part of the mix, whose rates fall by only 0.1 points per plan, and they differ by country; the calculator works them out for your numbers.

Below those points, the reasons to upgrade are features, not fees: staff accounts, third-party calculated shipping rates on Advanced, or the checkout and B2B options of Plus.

The third-party transaction fee

Shopify charges its own fee on every sale taken through a payment provider other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus. It comes on top of whatever the provider charges.1

At $20,000 a month in sales on Basic, that is $400 a month to Shopify before the provider's own 2.9% or so, which makes it the largest line on the bill for many stores. It is also why the break-even for Grow drops from $33,000 to $6,600 when you keep your own provider: the plan step saves a full percentage point instead of 0.2.

Stores in a country where Shopify Payments is not available, or with a provider contract they must keep, should compare plans with the Another provider option above.

Costs outside the plan

  • Apps. Reviews, search, upsells, size guides and loyalty are usually apps billed monthly. Across the app categories we priced for our own themes, the lowest paid plans that remove the app's branding add up to roughly $150 to $330 a month for a full stack.6
  • POS Pro. Casual in-person selling is included in every plan. POS Pro, for staff permissions and in-store inventory, is $89 per location per month in the US; Plus includes 20 locations.1
  • Marketplace orders. The first 50 marketplace orders synced through Shopify each month are free; above that Shopify charges 1% up to $99 a month.1
  • Theme. Free themes cost nothing; paid themes are a one-time purchase per store.
  • Plus terms. Plus is a contract of one or three years, and the one-year price is higher.5

How to pay Shopify less

  • Pay yearly once you know the store will stay. Yearly billing is about 25% cheaper on Basic, Grow and Advanced, and it lowers every break-even point above.
  • Use Shopify Payments where it is available. It removes the third-party fee, which is 2% of sales on Basic.
  • Choose the plan by break-even, not by feature list. Run your own numbers above and recheck when sales change by a third or more.
  • Count the apps. A theme with search, size guides, quick view and upsells built in can replace several monthly subscriptions. Our free themes Valmont, Elarune and Metrum each list the apps their built-in tools replace.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify cost per month?

In the US the plans cost $39 (Basic), $105 (Grow) and $399 (Advanced) per month billed monthly, or $29, $79 and $299 per month billed yearly. Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 per month on a three-year term. On top of the plan you pay card fees on every sale, and any apps you install.

What are Shopify's transaction fees?

With Shopify Payments there is no separate transaction fee, only the card rate: in the US 2.9%, 2.7%, 2.5% and 2.25% plus 30¢ for standard online cards on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. With a third-party payment provider Shopify charges 2%, 1%, 0.6% or 0.2% of each sale on top of the provider's own fee.

When should I upgrade from Shopify Basic to Grow?

On card fees alone, Grow pays for itself in the US above about $33,000 a month in online sales billed monthly, or $25,000 billed yearly, because each card rate is 0.2 points lower and the plan costs $66 ($50) more. With a third-party payment provider the break-even is about $6,600 a month, because the Shopify fee drops from 2% to 1%. Grow also adds five staff accounts, which Basic does not have.

When is Shopify Advanced worth it?

On card fees alone, Advanced overtakes Grow in the US above about $147,000 a month in online sales billed monthly, or $110,000 billed yearly. With a third-party payment provider the break-even is about $73,500 a month billed monthly. Stores below those levels usually choose Advanced for features such as 15 staff accounts or third-party calculated shipping rates, not to save on fees.

Is Shopify cheaper if I pay yearly?

Yes. Yearly billing costs about 25% less than monthly on Basic, Grow and Advanced: $29 instead of $39, $79 instead of $105 and $299 instead of $399 per month in the US. Card rates are the same either way.

Why are Shopify's prices different in my country?

Shopify sets plan prices and card rates per country and shows the pricing page for the country you visit from. The calculator covers the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia; for other countries, check the prices Shopify shows you.

Does the calculator store my numbers?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
