The most popular Shopify apps, counted store by store.

We read the apps on the home page of every Shopify store in the September 2026 crawl of the web, 716,063 stores with real visitors, and counted. Here is which apps they run, how many, how that changes with the size of the store and the country, and how fast the stores running each app are for real visitors. Free to download and to cite.

In brief

  • 716,063 Shopify stores were in the HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026, and 75% of them showed at least one app on the home page. The typical store runs 2; in the top 100,000 sites it is 4.
  • Judge.me is the most used Shopify app, on 177,452 stores (24.8%). That is more than the next five review apps together (Loox, Trustpilot, Yotpo Reviews, Klaviyo Reviews, Stamped: 93,761).
  • Klaviyo leads email and SMS with 154,526 stores (21.6%), ahead of Mailchimp (60,229).
  • Up to three apps, no measurable cost. Stores with 0 to 3 apps pass Core Web Vitals as often as comparable stores of the same traffic rank and country (within 2 points). With 9 or more apps they pass 69% of the time against 83% for comparable stores, 14 points lower.
  • JavaScript grows with every app: the median home page with no app loads 1.5 MB of JavaScript, and with 12 or more apps 4.8 MB.
  • Europe shows the law on the page. 21% of German and 22% of Italian Shopify stores run a cookie banner app, against 5% in the United States. Pay-later messaging is on 51% of German stores.
  • Ads and analytics tags are on 80.3% of stores, led by Google Analytics (67.0%), Meta Pixel (60.9%), Google Tag Manager (16.0%). They are counted apart from apps because many come with a sales channel.

The top 50 apps

An app is counted on a store when the code it adds to the home page is recognised by the Wappalyzer rules the HTTP Archive runs on every page it crawls. The last two columns are the share of the app's stores that pass all three Core Web Vitals for real visitors, and how that compares with stores of the same traffic rank in the same country (explained in the speed section).

"WhatsApp chat buttons" covers every WhatsApp chat widget the rules recognise, from several apps and themes. Secomapp is a developer whose code is shared by a few of its apps. The full list of apps on 100 or more stores is in apps.csv.

One page per app

Each of the 38 most used apps has its own page: store sizes, countries, the apps most often installed next to it, and the real-user speed of its stores against comparable ones.

Apps by the job they do

Each card shows how many Shopify stores run at least one app of that kind on the home page, and the five most used. Review apps and email tools are each on more than a third of stores; search, translation and accessibility apps are still rare.

How many apps, and what they cost in speed

The question every merchant asks: does each app slow the store down? We counted the apps on each home page and compared the stores' real-user Core Web Vitals with what comparable stores pass, meaning stores of the same Chrome UX Report traffic rank in the same country. That comparison matters. Bigger stores run more apps and also have heavier pages, and a store whose visitors are mostly on slower phones and networks passes less often whatever it installs.

Points of Core Web Vitals pass rate above or below comparable stores (same traffic rank, same country), by the number of apps on the home page. The table below has the same figures.

The pattern is a slope, not a cliff. Up to three apps, stores pass as often as comparable stores. The gap opens at five or six and averages 14 points for stores with nine or more, while the JavaScript on the page more than doubles. It is an association across hundreds of thousands of stores: stores with many apps also tend to have bigger catalogues and busier pages. Check what a single store runs with Store Lens.

Real-user speed of stores running each app

The Chrome UX Report publishes, for every site with enough Chrome visitors, the speed those visitors actually got: Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, each at the 75th percentile. A store passes when all three are inside Google's "good" limits (2.5 s, 200 ms and 0.1). For each app with at least 1,000 measured stores, the table compares its stores' pass rate with comparable stores: the pass rate of Shopify stores in the same traffic rank and country, weighted to match where the app's stores sit. 378,581 stores had all three figures published.

Read a negative number as "stores that run this tend to be slower than stores like them", not "this app makes a store slower". The app is one difference among many, and some apps are chosen by stores that already have a problem: a speed optimisation app, for one, is installed by stores that know they are slow. A positive number is no guarantee either. To see what one app costs on your own store, measure it with the app switched off and on.

Apps by store size

Site rank comes from the Chrome UX Report: how many Chrome visitors a site gets compared with the whole web. The larger the store, the more apps it shows and the heavier its pages. The crawl has few Shopify stores in the top 10,000 sites, so read that row as a hint.

Apps by country

The country each storefront reports, for the 15 countries with the most Shopify stores. Judge.me leads reviews almost everywhere; email, pay-later and cookie banners follow local habits and local law. Percentages next to an app name are its share of that country's stores.

"Pay later shown" counts stores with a buy now, pay later widget on the home page (Klarna, Affirm, Sezzle and others). Some of it comes from Shopify Payments' own messaging rather than an app. "Cookie banner app" counts third-party consent tools; Shopify's own banner is not included.

Ads and analytics tags

Tracking tags are on most stores and many arrive through a sales channel (the Google and Meta channels add their tags) rather than a separate app, so they are counted apart. Session recording and heatmap tools such as Microsoft Clarity and Hotjar are in the apps list above.

What this does not show

  • Apps that stay off the home page. Inventory, reporting, shipping-label and accounting apps work in the admin; checkout apps work at checkout; some review and upsell apps load only on product pages. None of them can be seen here, so the number of apps a store has installed is higher than the number on its home page.
  • Apps the rules do not know. Wappalyzer recognises a few hundred of the thousands of apps in the Shopify App Store. A new or small app is missing until someone writes a rule for it.
  • Stores with few visitors. The crawl covers the sites in the Chrome UX Report, which only lists sites with enough Chrome visitors. Brand-new and very quiet stores are missing. Read the shares, not the totals.
  • Cause and effect. The speed figures compare stores, they do not test apps. A store's theme, images, catalogue and other apps all differ too; the comparison with stores of the same traffic rank and country removes two of the biggest differences, not all of them.
  • Installs, revenue or ratings. Nothing here estimates installs, sales or app reviews.

How we counted

  • The HTTP Archive visits the home page of every site in the Chrome UX Report once a month with a phone-sized Chrome, keeps what it finds and runs the open-source Wappalyzer rules on the page, which name the technologies it recognises.13
  • We read the September 2026 mobile crawl and kept every home page that carried Shopify's storefront object with a published theme, 716,063 stores, the same stores as our themes report. Demo, unpublished and preview themes were left out.
  • Of the technologies found on those pages we kept the ones a merchant adds: apps and tools in categories such as reviews, marketing automation, live chat, loyalty, pay later, cookie consent, accessibility, page builders, search and translation, plus the Shopify apps category. Payment methods Shopify shows itself (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, card logos), monitoring libraries and JavaScript frameworks were left out. Where the rules split one product in two (Smile and Smile App, Privy and Privy App, Klaviyo and Klaviyo Forms) we counted it once.
  • Each app is placed in one group by its Wappalyzer category, corrected by hand where the category is too broad. "Apps on the home page" counts the apps per store without the ads and analytics tags.
  • Speed comes from the Chrome UX Report for August 2026, phone traffic, joined on the store's origin. A store is included when all three Core Web Vitals were published for it.2 "Comparable stores" is the pass rate of all measured Shopify stores in the same traffic-rank bucket and the same country (the 40 largest countries kept apart, the rest pooled), averaged over the stores in question.
  • JavaScript weight is the total JavaScript the crawler downloaded for the home page, from the crawl's page summary. The queries are in query.sql. We update the page every quarter, with the themes and platform migrations reports.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular Shopify apps?

Counted by the apps visible on the home page of 716,063 Shopify stores in the HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026, the most used are Judge.me (177,452), Klaviyo (154,526), Microsoft Clarity (94,052), Klarna (83,894), WhatsApp chat buttons (82,623) and Mailchimp (60,229). Ads and analytics tags such as Google Analytics and the Meta Pixel are more common still, and are counted separately.

What is the most popular reviews app on Shopify?

Judge.me, on 177,452 stores (24.8% of all Shopify stores), followed by Loox (28,829), Trustpilot (24,287), Yotpo Reviews (17,691). Among stores in the top 100,000 sites, Judge.me is the most used.

What is the most used email marketing app on Shopify?

Klaviyo, on 154,526 stores (21.6%), then Mailchimp (60,229), PushOwl (41,187), Omnisend (24,338). Among stores in the top 100,000 sites, Klaviyo is the most used.

How many apps does a typical Shopify store use?

The median Shopify store shows 2 apps on its home page and 25% show none. Stores in the top 100,000 sites run a median of 4. Apps that work only in the admin, at checkout or on product pages cannot be seen here, so the number installed is higher.

Do apps slow down a Shopify store?

A few of them do not, on this evidence. Stores with up to three apps on the home page pass Core Web Vitals as often as comparable stores of the same traffic rank in the same country. From about six apps the pass rate falls behind, and stores with nine or more pass 69% of the time against 83% for comparable stores. The median page with 12 or more apps loads 4.8 MB of JavaScript, against 1.5 MB with none. This is an association across many stores, not a test of any one app.

How are the apps detected?

The HTTP Archive loads the home page of every site in the Chrome UX Report once a month and runs the open-source Wappalyzer rules on it, which recognise the scripts, styles and markup an app adds to the page. We kept the Shopify stores, grouped the detections by what the app does and left out the payment methods Shopify shows itself.

Why is an app missing, or lower than expected?

Only apps that put something on the home page can be seen. Apps that work in the admin (inventory, reports, Store Diagnosis), at checkout, or only on product pages are invisible to this method, and an app is counted only when the Wappalyzer rules know it. Anyone can propose a new rule on GitHub.

Can I use this data?

Yes. The counts are free to use under CC BY 4.0 in articles, tools, decks and research, with credit to Mufatech Studio and a link to this page. They are built on HTTP Archive and Chrome UX Report data, which should be credited too.
