The most popular Shopify themes, counted store by store.

We read the theme of every Shopify store in the September 2026 crawl of the web, 716,063 stores with real visitors, and counted. Here is which themes run them, how that changes with the size of the store, how old the Dawn installs are, and how fast each theme is for real visitors. Free to download and to cite.

Dawn includes copies uploaded without a Theme Store id, which is how most agencies ship a Dawn-based build. The full list of 30 themes is below, and every theme with 20 or more stores is in themes.csv.

In brief

  • 716,063 Shopify stores were in the HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026, every one with the theme it was running on its home page.
  • Dawn runs 20% of them, 142,444 stores, more than the next 6 themes together. 32,046 of those are copies uploaded without a Theme Store id: Dawn as the base for a custom build.
  • Horizon, Shopify's newest free theme, reached 45,031 stores (6.3%) in the 15 months since its release, the fastest climb of any theme in the crawl.
  • 74% of stores use a Theme Store theme (39% free, 35% paid). The top paid theme is Prestige with 24,819 stores. 8% run a theme sold outside the Theme Store, led by Shrine, and 5% still run a retired Shopify theme such as Debut.
  • The bigger the store, the more custom the theme: 64% of Shopify stores in the top 100,000 sites run a Theme Store theme, against 74% beyond the top million, and custom or unnamed themes go from 12% of small stores to 25% of the largest.
  • 43% of Dawn stores run a version released more than two years ago. Only 8% are on a release from the last six months.
  • Real visitors see a good experience on 83% of Shopify stores: that is the share passing all three Core Web Vitals in the Chrome UX Report for August 2026. Among the 92 themes with at least 500 measured stores, Taiga passes most often (97%) and Debutify least often (54%).
  • 51% of Shopify stores are in the United States, then India (4.7%), United Kingdom (4.2%), Germany (3.4%). 12% of stores showed a converted currency to the crawler.

The top 30 themes

Every Shopify store prints the name of its theme, the version and, for themes installed from the Theme Store, the Theme Store id. We counted by id first and by name when the id was missing. The last column is the share of each theme's stores that pass all three Core Web Vitals for real visitors, from the speed section.

"Unnamed custom themes" are stores whose theme has no name in its settings schema. Shrine includes Shrine PRO; Minimog includes its OS 2.0 edition. Theme Store prices are the one-time US prices listed on 26 Sep 2026.

One page per theme

Each of the 30 most used themes has its own page: versions in use, store sizes, countries and real-user speed against all Shopify stores.

Free, paid, custom: it depends on the size of the store

Site rank comes from the Chrome UX Report: how many visitors a site gets compared with the whole web. The crawl has few Shopify stores in the top 10,000 sites, so read that row as a hint rather than a measurement.

Retired Shopify themes are the free themes Shopify withdrew when Online Store 2.0 arrived (Debut, Brooklyn, Minimal, Supply, Venture and others). Themes sold outside the Theme Store are listed below.

Real-user speed by theme

The Chrome UX Report publishes, for every site with enough Chrome visitors, the speed those visitors actually got: Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift, each at the 75th percentile. A store passes when all three are inside Google's "good" limits (2.5 s, 200 ms and 0.1). We matched every Shopify store in the crawl to its phone data for the month before and grouped by theme. Only themes with at least 500 measured stores are listed, best first.

Median LCP, INP and CLS are the middle store's 75th-percentile value, so half the stores on that theme do better and half worse. A theme sets the ceiling; apps, image sizes and the number of sections on the home page decide the rest. Check any single store with the theme detector or Store Lens.

How old the Dawn installs are

Dawn is Shopify's reference theme and the base of most custom builds, and every Dawn store carries its version number. Shopify does not update a store's theme automatically: a merchant stays on the version they installed until they add the new one and move their settings over. Release dates are from Dawn's GitHub repository.

Horizon's climb since May 2025

Shopify released Horizon, the successor to Dawn, on 21 May 2025, together with nine themes built on it (Savor, Tinker, Atelier, Ritual, Pitch, Fabric, Dwell, Heritage, Vessel). This table counts Horizon itself; the nine others appear under their own names in the top 30 and in themes.csv.

Themes from outside the Theme Store, and the retired ones

Shopify's Theme Store lists about 320 themes, but a store can upload any theme as a file. Two groups show up at scale: themes sold on marketplaces such as ThemeForest or by their makers directly, and Shopify's own retired free themes that merchants never replaced.

A store on a retired theme has no update path: Shopify stopped maintaining these themes in 2021 and 2022, and they predate Online Store 2.0 sections. Themes from outside the Theme Store are not reviewed by Shopify and, in the speed table, sit at the bottom.

Where Shopify stores are

Each storefront tells the crawler the country of the store and the currency it showed. Stores that use Shopify Markets show the crawler, which visits from the United States, a converted price; those are the "converted currency" stores in the feature table below.

Platform features in use

The same storefront object records which platform features were on for the visit. The MCP endpoint is the one to watch: Shopify switched it on for storefronts in 2025 so that AI shopping agents can read a store's catalogue and policies, and almost every store now exposes it, whether or not the merchant knows.

How this compares with other counts

Theme Vitals, by Sia Karamalegos, was the first public page to join the theme object Shopify prints on every storefront with the Chrome UX Report, and its write-up of the method is worth reading before you quote any theme speed table.4 It ranks themes by the share of stores with good Core Web Vitals, as we do; this page adds how many stores run each theme, how that changes with the size of the store, how old the Dawn installs are, and the CSVs and queries to rerun it.

Shopify's own performance dashboard publishes a theme table from its stores' field data, limited to the last three versions of each theme and the last seven days.5 That is why a theme can score higher there than here: this page counts every version in use, and a third of Dawn stores run a release from 2024 or earlier. Read Shopify's table as what a theme does when kept current, and this one as what visitors meet across all the stores on it.

Store Leads and BuiltWith count themes across far more domains, including stores with almost no visitors, from their own detection. Store Leads' most-used "theme" in September 2026 is "trademark", a detection artefact rather than a theme, with Dawn second at 9%.6 Several statistics pages copy that figure. Here Dawn is counted from the theme object itself, with its Theme Store id, across stores that have real traffic.

  • Stores with few visitors. The crawl covers the sites in the Chrome UX Report, which only lists sites with enough Chrome visitors. Brand-new and very quiet stores are missing, so the total is far below Shopify's millions of merchants. Read the shares, not the totals.
  • Headless stores. A store whose front end is built with Hydrogen or another framework does not print the theme object, so it is counted as Shopify by the crawl's technology detection but has no theme here.
  • Renamed themes. A developer can change a theme's schema name. Stores on a renamed copy of a Theme Store theme without its id are counted under the new name, usually in "custom or unnamed".
  • Why a theme is slow. The speed table shows what visitors got on stores using each theme, not what the theme is capable of. Heavy apps and large images slow any theme.
  • Sales. Nothing here estimates revenue or traffic per store.

How we counted

  • The HTTP Archive visits the home page of every site in the Chrome UX Report once a month with a phone-sized Chrome and keeps what it finds. For Shopify stores it records the storefront object (window.Shopify) that every theme prints: theme name, version, Theme Store id, country, currency and locale.1
  • We read the September 2026 mobile crawl and kept every root page that carried that object with a published theme, 716,063 stores. Demo, unpublished and preview themes were left out.
  • A theme is identified by its Theme Store id where present (matched to the Theme Store catalogue, which also gives the price) and otherwise by the name in its settings schema. A handful of spellings are folded together (Shrine PRO into Shrine, Minimog OS 2.0 into Minimog).
  • Themes are sorted into five kinds: free and paid themes in the Theme Store today, Shopify's retired free themes, named themes sold outside the Theme Store, and everything else (custom builds and unnamed themes).
  • Speed comes from the Chrome UX Report for August 2026, phone traffic, joined on the store's origin. A store is included when all three Core Web Vitals were published for it. Dawn's release dates are from the Shopify/dawn repository on GitHub; a store's version is dated by the nearest tag at or below it.23
  • The queries are in query.sql. We update the page every quarter, with the platform migrations report.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular Shopify theme?

Dawn. In the HTTP Archive crawl of September 2026, 142,444 of 716,063 Shopify stores (19.9%) ran Dawn or a copy of it. The next most used themes were Horizon (45,031), Prestige (24,819), Impulse (20,622) and Debut (18,973).

What is the most popular paid Shopify theme?

Prestige, with 24,819 stores (3.5%), followed by Impulse (20,622), Impact (11,640) and Symmetry (10,215). Paid Theme Store themes together run 35% of Shopify stores.

How many Shopify stores use Horizon?

45,031 stores in the crawl, 6.3% of all Shopify stores, as of September 2026. Horizon was released on 21 May 2025. 7,747 of those stores run a copy without the Theme Store id, typically a developer's modified version.

How many Shopify stores use a free theme?

39% run one of Shopify's current free themes and a further 5% still run a retired free theme such as Debut, Brooklyn or Minimal. Paid Theme Store themes run 35%, themes sold outside the Theme Store 8%, and the remaining 12% are custom or unnamed themes.

Which Shopify theme is the fastest for real visitors?

Among themes with at least 500 stores in the Chrome UX Report for August 2026, Taiga had the largest share of stores passing all three Core Web Vitals (97%), followed by Minimal (96%) and Simple (96%). Across all Shopify stores the share is 83%. The theme is only one factor: apps, images and the number of sections matter as much.

How is the theme of a store detected?

Every Shopify storefront publishes its theme in a small script on the page (the Shopify.theme object): the theme name from its settings schema, the version and, for themes installed from the Theme Store, the Theme Store id. The HTTP Archive records that object once a month for every site in its crawl. We count by Theme Store id first and by schema name when the id is missing.

Why are the numbers different from BuiltWith or Store Leads?

Those databases crawl many more domains, including stores with almost no visitors, and they estimate rather than publish their detection rules. This count only includes sites with enough Chrome visitors to be in the Chrome UX Report, uses the theme object Shopify itself prints on the page, and publishes its query. Read it as the state of stores with real traffic.

Can I use this data?

Yes. The counts are free to use under CC BY 4.0 in articles, tools and research, with credit to Mufatech Studio and a link to this page. They are built on HTTP Archive and Chrome UX Report data, which should be credited too.
