Migration checklist · 2026

The WooCommerce to Shopify migration checklist.

48 steps in the order we run them on client migrations. Tick them off as you go; your progress stays in this browser. The steps marked with Shopify limits are where most do-it-yourself migrations break.

In brief

  • A WooCommerce to Shopify migration has seven phases: audit, data mapping, build, SEO preservation, testing, launch day and the first 30 days.
  • The three things that break do-it-yourself migrations are Shopify's 3-option limit per product, flat collections instead of nested categories, and missing 301 redirects.1
  • Customer passwords cannot be migrated by any tool; customers receive an account invitation after launch.

1. Audit what you have

You cannot plan a migration you have not measured. The free readiness scanner covers the public half of this phase in about 20 seconds.

2. Map WooCommerce data to Shopify

Shopify limits that break migrations

Shopify allows 3 options per product and up to 2,048 variants per product.1 Collections are flat, there is no parent category. Customer passwords are hashed and cannot be moved by any tool.

3. Build the Shopify store

Build in a client transfer store or a paused trial so nothing goes live before you are ready.

4. Preserve SEO

Why URLs change

Shopify uses fixed paths: products live under /products/, categories become /collections/, posts move under /blogs/. Every WooCommerce URL such as /product/… or /product-category/… needs a 301 redirect.

5. Test before anyone sees it

6. Launch day

7. The first 30 days
